DODMERB

This section will be very brief. I am not a medical doctor and cannot give you any medical advice. My only advice is to schedule your DODMERB examine as soon as possible. Occasionally, additional information is required for the military doctors to make a decision. If you are late in this process, it can be difficult to get the necessary medical documentation back to them in time. So, start early to avoid this hazard.

Also, when filling out the paperwork do not self-diagnose yourself. If a doctor has told you that you have had some ailment, then put that down on your paperwork. Otherwise, don’t self-diagnose yourself. Just because you had a bad cold last year and you couldn’t breathe well for a few days does not mean you have asthma. You only have asthma if your doctor said you do. Be honest, but don’t give yourself ailments that you don’t have.

As far as medical waivers go, what you need to understand is that these will be requested by the Service Academy. Each Academy will review your file and your medical status, and decide if it is something that they can request a waiver for. You should not need to do anything to start this process.

Each Service Academy has its own waiver authority, and they waive different things. Do not be surprised if West Point and Annapolis waive something and the Air Force Academy does not. Each service has its own rules.

The Academy’s waiver authority might request additional information about your medical history to determine if they can waive your medical condition. This is a slow process, and that is why I recommend doing the exam as early as you can.

If you have additional questions on DODMERB, you should call your Service Academy Counselor. They aren’t doctor’s either, but they can offer guidance and advice.
